The Utter Project

UTTER converstation

This is an exchange project between three jewellers, Stella Chrysostomou, Andrea Daly and Peter Deckers. As conceptual thinkers and word-lovers, they reflect not only the desire to build an intriguing installation for this venue but also the interest in the process of jewellery-making and how their boundaries can be explored within a rigorous ruled-based dynamic. The objective is to create a body of work that reflects the concept of ‘the book’ – as a mode of transferring ideas, experiences and information from person to person. The artists are interested in the dialogue between themselves, with the objects they make and with the projected audience through the ‘chatter’ that objects can create.

About the Artists:

Andrea Daly is a practicing jeweler who works from her own studio exhibits both nationally and internationally, has been involved in Education for many years and was a Partner in Fingers Jewellery Gallery from 1991 – June 2017. She is involved in the Jewellery community such as delivering artist talks at ‘The New Dowse’ (2016), The ‘Auckland Art Gallery’ (2015), selector for ‘Handshake 3’ (2015), papers delivered at the ‘Jemposium Conference’ (2012), ‘J.O.T.’ (2003), ‘Korero a te Whatu: the Persuasive Object’ Craft Conference Auckland (1998), part of the working party for ‘Permit’ Symposium’ (2007), part of the Discussion Panel ‘Bone Stone Shell’ Auckland Museum (2005), attending the Otto Kunzli Symposium in Dunedin (1990).

Stella Chrysostomou
has been making jewellery since she took a night class at Wellington High in 1991. She went on to study jewellery for three years at Whitireia Community Polytechnic graduating in 1998 with a Diploma in Craft Design. She also has a BA in History & Politics. She combines her technical skills with ideas to create contemporary jewellery that challenges preconceptions about jewellery, investigates psychological aspects and societal notions. She has presented her work in solo, group, and invited shows in New Zealand and internationally. Predominately a maker, she also curates and writes.

Peter Deckers
was born in the Netherlands and completed his early jewellery training and education there. He immigrated to New Zealand in 1985 and completed a Master of Fine Arts degree at Elam, Auckland University, in 2003. Deckers, the jewellery coordinator and a part time lecturer/ senior tutor at Whitireia NZ, Porirua, is both a contemporary artist and a craftsperson. Ideas that make distinctive connections with jewellery are the inspiration for his work, often incorporated with discerning installations. Deckers exhibits with galleries throughout New Zealand and internationally. He is the founder of the highly respected, successful HandShake Project.
